COVID-19: All You Need To Know In 3 Minutes

In December 2019, the novel coronavirus SARS COV-2 first spotted in Wuhan, China started to spread rapidly around the world. Here are the answers to some common questions you may have on COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus:

How is the virus spread?

The virus that causes COVID-19 is spread via respiratory droplets. If an infected person sneezes, talks, or coughs near you, you can get the virus if you come in contact with the droplets released. This can happen if you inhale the droplets or touch surfaces they settle on and then touch your nose, eyes, or mouth.

What are the symptoms?

According to the WHO, COVID-19 symptoms include Fever, Cough, and Tiredness.

Less common symptoms include Body aches, Nasal Congestion, Headache, Conjunctivitis, Sore Throat, Diarrhoea, Loss of Taste, Loss of Smell (Anosmia), Skin rashes, Discoloration of fingers or toes.

Who can get it?

COVID-19 can affect anyone but most people recover without needing any treatment. However, people with chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension or lung diseases, and older people have a higher risk of developing more severe forms of the disease.

Does heat or hot weather kill the virus?

According to the NCDC, there is no evidence so far that hot weather prevents the spread of the virus.

Is there a cure for the virus?

Not yet. Since the start of the pandemic, different drugs have had different success rates in clinical trials focused on treating the virus. It is important to remember that this is a new virus, hence it will take a while to find a definitive cure. The NCDC says that current treatment is targeted at relieving symptoms while the immune system fights the illness.

How can I protect myself?

  • Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or alcohol-based sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable.
  • Sneeze into your elbow or disposable paper towel and wash your hands after.
  • Keep a distance of 2 meters between you and anyone, especially those who are coughing or sneezing.
  • Practice contactless greetings
  • Use non-medical face masks when in public spaces, and avoid crowded settings.
  • Stay home, and only go out if you need to.

Will lime and ginger protect me from the virus?

No. Fruits and other natural spices can help boost your immune system but they will not protect you from getting the virus. Even as you endeavor to fortify your immunity, it is more important to follow the guidelines and stay safe this season.
